⚔️ Clusters & Containers

Metaphors and methods for structuring your writing ideas!

Sharpen your style and find joy in wordcraft with bestselling writing expert Helen Sword.

Dear fellow writer,

Welcome back to Swordcraft, my weekly series of short, sharp videos for scholarly and professional writers who want to hone their wordcraft, one snippet at a time.

Today’s swordsnip is the first installment in a new 6-part sequence for paid subscribers called Structural Metaphors. I’m really excited about this topic, which draws on ideas I’ve been thinking about for a long time!

Every week over the next six weeks, I’ll introduce you to a playful-but-serious metaphor to help you structure a key aspect of your writing.

This week, with “Clusters & Containers,” we’ll look at using analog tools such as scrap paper, post-it notes, boxes, bowls, and even walls to make sense of a messy mass of ideas. Subsequent videos will explore metaphors and methods for structuring your writing priorities, your processes, your texts, your reader’s journey, and your writing time. We’re going to have a lot of fun!

Paid subscribers can find a copy of this week’s Structural Metaphors prompts at the bottom of this post.

But wait, there’s more!

Looking for more structure in your writing life? Don’t miss these other structure-themed events kicking off this week:

  • Structural Designs (Jul 9 & 10)

Sneak a peek into the Live Writing Studio at this FREE WriteSPACE Special Event, offered twice in one week to accommodate participants in any time zone. In the first hour, you’ll learn strategies for identifying the optimal structure for your own current book, thesis, article, chapter, or any other writing project you’d like to focus on; in the second hour, you can get supportive feedback on your new structural design. (Two 2-hour sessions, July 9 & 10; register for this free event here).

  • The Structure Sequence (Jul 9 - Aug 15)
Deepen your structural savvy with the Structure Sequence, a 6-week series of two Live Writing Studio sessions per week focusing on the theme of structure. (Twelve 2-hour sessions; sign up for a 6-week Structure Sequence pass here).

I’d love to see you there!

Kia pai tō koutou rā (have a great day) – and keep on writing!

Helen
