The Thesis Whisperer Walk

A conversation on writing with Inger Mewburn

Sharpen your style and find joy in wordcraft with bestselling writing expert Helen Sword.

Dear fellow writer,

Welcome to Swordswings, my monthly podcast series for writers in motion. These recordings are intended for you to listen to when you’re moving around — which is a great way to get your writing moving as well.

Today's episode has been excerpted from a conversation that I held back in 2021 with Professor Inger Mewburn, better known as the Thesis Whisperer.

Inger is Director of Research Training at the Australian National University and the author of numerous scholarly papers, books, and book chapters about research education, post-PhD employability, and many other topics.

In this extract, we start by discussing Inger’s academic background and the evolution of her influential blog; from there we discuss the role of technology in academic writing and the puzzle of post-PhD employability.

For more nuggets of wisdom from the Thesis Whisperer, including a hands-on writing workshop based on Inger’s recent book How to Fix Your Academic Writing Trouble, I recommend that you watch the full two-hour Special Event video (see below).

Enjoy!

You can listen to my monthly Swordswings series wherever you download your podcasts.

The full video of my 2021 WriteSPACE Special Event with Inger Mewburn is available in the Videos section of the WriteSPACE Library. You’ll find downloadable audio files and transcripts of all Swordswings episodes in the WriteSPACE Audio section.

Kia pai tō koutou rā (have a great day) – and keep on writing!

Helen
